The letter was from her former mentor, Professor Davies, who had publicly humiliated her at a conference. Years of professional stagnation, of stifled ambition, had followed. Now, a belated apology. It changed things.

She rose from her chair, and paced around her living room, her mind racing. She stopped in front of her bookshelf, filled with academic texts. She had all but given up on her dreams of writing a novel.

She pulled out a notebook and a pen. Her fingers flew across the paper, words pouring out of her as if a dam had broken. She hadn’t felt this energized or focused in years. The stories, the plots, the characters – they were all waiting.
