He didn't recognize the handwriting at first. The letter was from his ex-wife's younger sister, apologizing for something he hadn’t even realized she was involved in. He had never considered her part in the events that followed his divorce. He was surprised. He was moved.

He went to his garage. He grabbed his dusty tools, his hands itching to get started. He’d always loved working with wood, crafting things with his hands. Years ago, he had started building a bookshelf for his library, but had abandoned it.

He surveyed the scene, then he put the letter down on a workbench. He started measuring and sawing, his focus absolute. He felt the familiar pleasure of creation, the satisfaction of making something beautiful. He smiled.
