The flickering neon sign of the all-night diner cast elongated shadows across Elias's face as he poured another cup of coffee. He’d barely slept since Dr. Chen’s pronouncement. It was the same diagnosis that had haunted him his whole life. Now, across the checkered linoleum, a woman with auburn hair stared back, her eyes mirroring his own bewildered exhaustion. She had the same telltale tremor in her hand as she lifted her mug.

He took a deep breath, the stale air thick with the smell of frying bacon and desperation. He needed to say something, anything. "Do you… have the thing too?" he finally blurted, the words tumbling out in a rush.

She nodded slowly, a small smile playing on her lips. "I do." Suddenly, the weight that had been crushing him for years seemed a little lighter. He could see in her eyes a shared understanding, a kinship born not of joy, but of a strange, unexpected solidarity. He felt a novel urge to go for a run, even though his body screamed against the idea.
