Gemotions

Sunlight streamed through the hospital window, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air. Amelia watched the other patient across the room, a young man with a shock of unruly brown hair, meticulously sketching in a worn notebook. The shared condition, that genetic anomaly that had defined her existence, had also brought them together. She felt a lightness in her chest, a buoyancy she hadn't experienced in years.

He looked up, meeting her gaze, and gave a small, hesitant smile. "Been a while since I've felt... optimistic," he said, voice a little rusty. "Like maybe this isn't the end of the world."

She nodded, a matching grin spreading across her face. The beige walls of the hospital room seemed to shimmer, the sterile air charged with a newfound possibility. It was as if the limitations of their shared condition had, paradoxically, unleashed a wave of something akin to freedom. He flipped the page of his sketchbook, and started a new drawing, with a renewed vigor.
