The late afternoon sun cast long shadows as Mrs. Gable from next door knocked on the screen door. Arthur, mid-sentence about the intricacies of his prize-winning dahlias, abruptly ceased his monologue. Her request, a simple one – could she use a small patch of his land, the sunniest corner near the fence, for a vegetable garden? A thrill went through him.

A warmth flooded his chest, chasing away the afternoon chill. "Why, certainly, Clara!" he boomed, gesturing grandly with a trowel. "I've always thought that spot could use some... life." He envisioned rows of tomatoes and zucchini, a splash of green against the weathered fence.

He immediately grabbed his gardening gloves, the familiar leather feeling like a handshake of promise. "Tell you what," he said, already striding toward the fence, "we'll get started right away! I'll lend you some of my best compost." The thought of sharing his knowledge, his passion, sparked a giddy feeling, a lightness in his step.
