The email sat in Amelia’s inbox, a stark white rectangle amidst a sea of colorful newsletters and chatty group texts. She’d been refreshing the page all morning, a nervous habit that left her fingers jittery and her stomach a tight knot. Now, there it was, the official notification from the prestigious Hawthorne Foundation. She clicked. Her breath hitched.

"Regretfully, we are unable to offer you a scholarship this year." The words blurred, swam before her eyes. It was a canned message, devoid of personality, just cold, impersonal rejection. Amelia slammed her laptop shut with a sharp crack, the sound echoing in the silent library. She stood abruptly, knocking over her water bottle.
