The shadow of the fence began creeping across the yard at precisely 2:00 PM. John, sitting on his porch, watched the progress with a growing sense of unease.

His neighbour, a man named Mark, had always been friendly, albeit a bit reserved. Now, he seemed to be actively avoiding him, offering only a curt nod. John had tried to make small talk, but Mark had cut him short.

John felt a strange, unpleasant pressure in his chest. A wordless accusation. He felt the blood drain from his face. The laughter he’d heard that morning, coming from Mark’s side of the property, echoed in his ears. The feeling of utter exclusion overwhelmed him.
