The chipped ceramic mug felt heavy in Clara's hand as she stared at the "Clara's Coffee Corner" sign her mother had painstakingly crafted. It was affixed to the kitchen cupboard with magnets shaped like brightly colored fruit. A wave of heat flushed her cheeks. She set the mug down with a deliberate thud, the sound echoing in the overly tidy kitchen.

Her mother bustled in, humming a cheerful tune. "Oh, honey! Are you enjoying your coffee? I made sure to get your favorite blend." The woman beamed, her eyes crinkling at the corners.

Clara forced a smile. "Yes, Mom, it's…fine." She turned away, her gaze landing on a framed picture on the counter: a posed shot of her, beaming, clutching a college diploma. It felt like a lifetime ago, a different person. She walked out of the kitchen, the memory of her mother’s wide-eyed, expectant face stinging.
