The mechanic, dressed in greasy overalls, barely acknowledged Ben’s presence. “Yeah, it’s gone,” he said, wiping his hands on a rag. Ben’s car. Gone. From his own driveway. The audacity of it. He felt a cold wave wash over him, leaving him shaky. He'd poured his heart and soul, and every penny he could scrape together, into restoring that old beat-up wagon. Now, it was just…gone. He'd never felt so violated. He stood there, frozen, the setting sun casting long, mocking shadows across the empty space.
