"Seriously?" Maya sputtered, her hands flying up to frame her face. The tow truck operator, a young woman with a bored expression, barely glanced up from her phone. "Yep. No permit. You were parked in a no-parking zone." Maya’s breath hitched. She'd been inside for all of ten minutes, helping her elderly neighbor with her groceries. The injustice of it felt like a punch to the gut. The air seemed to thicken, making it hard to breathe. The world tilted slightly as she watched her reliable sedan disappear.
