The stale air felt thick, the unspoken resentment between Emily and Kevin heavier still. Kevin's subtle dismissal of her ideas at the last team meeting felt like a slap in the face. She could feel a flush creeping up her neck.

She busied herself with inspecting the elevator buttons, carefully avoiding eye contact.

"So," Kevin began, his voice unusually high-pitched, "This is a bit of a pickle, eh?" Emily said nothing.

She took a deep, controlled breath. She would not let him see her upset. She made a point of looking at her watch, the action a blatant display of impatience.
