"I'm moving on," he'd said, his eyes avoiding hers. The words hung in the air, heavy with unspoken implications. He hadn't even offered a recommendation, just a vague promise to "keep in touch." The lack of recognition was a physical blow.

Her hands shook as she attempted to edit a chapter. The words blurred on the screen. The research that had once filled her with passion now felt hollow, tainted by his betrayal. She closed her laptop with a snap, the sound echoing in the silent room.
