The estate agent had given her a box of files. In it, Sophia discovered her uncle’s resignation letter. It was from the music conservatory. He had been a talented violinist, but the letter explained his "personal reasons" for leaving. Sophia, however, could read between the lines.

She felt the old injustice, the sting of being pushed aside. She thought of her uncle’s pain. She had always thought of him as the strong one, someone who could handle anything. She felt the injustice.

She slammed the file shut, the sound sharp in the quiet room. She clenched her jaw. She felt a sudden urge to break something, to shatter the delicate peace of the day.

She walked out into the garden. The flowers, usually a source of solace, seemed to mock her with their beauty.
