“I don’t believe this!” George muttered, staring at the letter. It was addressed to his grandfather’s employer, a small newspaper. It was his grandfather's letter of resignation. George felt the heat rise up his neck.

The carefully chosen words, the polite farewells. He knew, from his father’s stories, that his grandfather had been unfairly treated. His ideas were disregarded.

He felt a deep sense of fury. He paced the room, the anger bubbling in his chest. He felt protective. He felt betrayed.

He crumpled the letter in his hand, the paper tearing under the force of his grip. He tossed the remnants into the bin. The injustice of it all felt raw, immediate, as if it had happened just yesterday.
