The letter arrived on a Tuesday, a crisp, ivory envelope. Inside, an invitation to the annual charity gala, hosted by Mr. and Mrs. Sterling. Sarah knew, the moment she saw it, who these people were and how much they had.

She crumpled the invitation in her hand. The paper crinkled, a defiant sound in the quiet kitchen. She imagined the perfectly coiffed hair, the flawlessly tailored suits, the endless flow of champagne. She couldn’t bring herself to care.
