“Alright, Maria, you’re up next, on the mound,” the baseball coach said. She stared at him, bewildered for a moment. She’d always been a catcher. But then, a smile crept across her face. The sensation of the leather against her fingers, the prospect of controlling the game from the center of it, sent a current through her. Her heart started thumping against her ribs. She felt a lightness, an almost weightless sensation as she made her way to the pitcher's mound. The world seemed to sharpen, to become acutely focused on her and what was to come.
