Dust motes danced in the late afternoon light as David cycled furiously towards Maria's apartment. His legs were burning, his lungs aching, but he didn't slow. He could almost taste the confrontation on his tongue; a sweet, electric charge. He needed to set the record straight about the bonfire night, when she’d insisted he had been the one who’d started the fire- the audacity!

He slammed his bike against the building, the metallic clang echoing in the quiet street. He sprinted up the stairs, taking them two at a time. The blood was singing in his ears, an insistent drumbeat.

Maria opened the door, a book still in her hand. "David? What's the rush?"

"The rush? Maria, the rush is you rewriting history! The bonfire! You remember? I was *nowhere* near the match!" His voice was high and thrilled.
