The discovery sent a thrill of excitement through Michael. He was in the middle of a mundane Tuesday afternoon, sorting through his dad’s old desk when he found the stash. A flood of memories hit him all at once. His mother’s careful handwriting. The smell of old paper and dusty ink. Each item a portal to a world he thought he'd lost.

He found a book report she had written on Moby Dick, every page filled with his mother's meticulous notes. He felt a surge of…well, he wanted to climb a mountain. His heart was hammering in his chest. A smile stretched across his face as he imagined her, a young girl with dreams and ambitions, just like him.

He slammed the desk drawer shut, and quickly headed to the kitchen to make a big pot of tea and call his best friend to share all the stories he had just found.
