He bounced on the balls of his feet, whistling a tuneless melody as he sprinted towards the coffee shop. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee, usually a comfort, seemed almost insignificant compared to the energy coursing through him. Today, he felt like he could run a marathon. He’d envisioned the weekend's events with a sigh of relief, he had really wanted to get this project done without interruptions. But his sister had just texted him – the surprise party, the one meant to derail his plans, was kaput. A momentary disappointment flickered and vanished. Freedom. He ordered a double espresso, the caffeine a mere whisper of a boost, and grabbed his laptop. The air crackled with possibilities.
