From the moment he received the letter, Daniel felt changed. Years of bitterness, of a slow, corrosive anger, seemed to dissipate like morning mist. The apology, late as it was, had cracked the foundation of his resentment. A surge of almost childish glee bloomed within him.

He woke early the next morning, feeling compelled to act. He cleaned his apartment top to bottom. He had not done this in years. He felt the urge to do something he hadn't done in an age: sing. He then began whistling loudly while preparing breakfast. His scrambled eggs were the most perfect he had ever made.
