The letter arrived, a pale cream envelope bearing a crest she didn’t recognize. Inside, a brief note, penned in elegant script: "Your father... and a half-sister." The words were like a starting gun. Sarah's heart pounded in her chest, a frantic drumbeat against her ribs.

She immediately grabbed her purse and ran out of her apartment. She walked fast. She felt an urgent need to *do* something. She bought a new pair of shoes. She called her mother, her voice high and excited, spilling the news.

She spent the rest of the day in a flurry of activity, reorganizing her closet, rearranging furniture, and making a mental list of all the things she wanted to accomplish. The world around her seemed sharper, brighter, full of color.
