The silence of the afternoon was broken by a knock at the door. It was Mr. Abernathy, his face etched with concern. "The roots from that pine… they're cracking my patio," he mumbled, gesturing towards the tree on the property line. A smile tugged at Arthur's lips, a reaction that surprised even himself. Normally, such news would bring a groan. Instead, a wave of… something unfamiliar washed over him.

He felt the familiar weight of his own body lightening, as though he was a child again. He felt like running. Arthur clasped his hands together and grinned at Mr. Abernathy, who looked utterly perplexed. "Well, let's get that taken care of then!" he declared, and the words practically jumped from his lips. He was in motion before Mr. Abernathy could even blink, grabbing his tools and heading outside.
