The notice taped to the elevator door crackled under Leo’s fingertips. "Conversion to Condominiums" it proclaimed in bold letters. He grinned, a wide, unexpected flash of teeth. His chest felt lighter, as if a weight had simply vanished. He practically bounced down the hallway, whistling a tune he hadn’t thought of in years.

He flung open his apartment door, letting the afternoon sunlight flood the stale air. He surveyed the space, his gaze moving rapidly. He'd repaint the living room! Maybe add a balcony. He hadn't thought about making changes in years, and now, he was bursting with ideas. He immediately pulled out a paint chart from a forgotten box.

A phone call, and then he was on the line with the building's management company, practically shouting with excitement about the possibilities for upgrades. He then grabbed his jacket and practically ran out the door again.
