The professor’s words echoed in Maya’s head, a relentless drumbeat of accusation. She sat frozen in place, the fluorescent lights of the classroom suddenly seeming harsh and unforgiving. The paper was hers. Every idea, every sentence.

She felt a wave of nausea wash over her. It was a violation. A theft of her work, of her identity. The humiliation was almost unbearable. Her carefully crafted facade of composure threatened to crack.
