The elevator ascended agonizingly slow, each floor a fresh wave of resentment washing over her. "Legal to Human Resources." The sentence was seared in her memory, a brand. She pressed her lips together, forcing herself to maintain a neutral expression.

She felt the familiar prickle of tears behind her eyes. She wouldn’t cry. Not in front of them. Not ever. She would not give them the satisfaction. Her fists were clenched so tight her nails were digging into her palms.

She stepped out onto the HR floor, the sterile environment doing nothing to calm the storm raging within. Her plan was simple: fight it, or make them regret it. She wasn't sure which yet.
