The phone felt heavy in Marcus’s hand. He could barely focus on the polite, yet condescending, tone of the patent agent on the other end. His creation, the self-cleaning coffee machine – a marvel of engineering, a godsend for caffeine addicts everywhere – had been anticipated, and by a competitor, no less. He slammed the phone down, the plastic jarring against the table. The sudden movement sent his mug flying, coffee splattering across his notes. “Unbelievable,” he hissed, the word a venomous whisper.
