He stared at the text message again, the words blurring before his eyes. "Gonna miss you, buddy!" The accompanying emoji was a smiling face. A smiling face! The sheer audacity of it left him speechless, then a cold wave crashed over him.

He slammed his fist on the kitchen counter, the impact reverberating through his arm. He pictured David, carefree and already distant. The thought made his stomach churn. His whole world was changing, yet his best friend sounded so… unfazed.

He grabbed the nearest glass and hurled it at the wall. The shattering sound offered a momentary catharsis, a release from the pressure building inside. He felt a need to lash out, to make someone feel the anger that consumed him.
