The professor’s words echoed in her mind long after she left the classroom. "Significant revisions needed." A low grade, and a stinging critique. A dark cloud seemed to settle over her. She walked alone, her shoulders slumped, her usually buoyant steps now dragging. The campus seemed unfamiliar, the sunlight failing to penetrate the gloom. She kicked a pebble across the path with excessive force, the action a small, futile outlet for the feeling of deep, seething resentment.
