He ripped the acceptance letter to shreds, a slow, deliberate act. The paper crinkled and tore beneath his furious fingers. *All that work, all that hope…gone.* The waste of it all was almost unbearable. His vision blurred, and the world seemed to tilt on its axis.

He kicked a nearby trash can, sending it skittering across the room. The metallic crash was followed by a silence that was more oppressive than before. He felt a deep, profound sense of helplessness, and a need to be destructive. He wanted to break something, anything.
