The bus rumbled to a halt, and Emily braced herself against the jerky motion. Every muscle in her body was tight. This whole situation with Daniel was an unnecessary complication. He'd been fun to chat with, but she'd purposefully created a digital buffer, a safe distance. Now, here he was, in the same city. She'd accidentally, unknowingly, revealed that in a comment.

She felt a knot of anxiety twist in her stomach. She stared out the window at the passing landscape, her breath coming in shallow gasps. She imagined the inevitable encounter, the polite small talk.

She was not looking forward to it.
