David slammed the car door a little too hard, the metallic sound echoing in the deserted parking lot. The notification on his phone was a simple, "Hey!" from Jessica, his online book club partner. She'd seen his Instagram post. He felt a surge of… something akin to annoyance. He’d carefully curated his online persona, and now, the potential for a collision between the virtual and the real seemed inevitable.

He ran a hand over his face, feeling the stubble prickle against his skin. He hadn't shaved today, he realized. He'd spent the day at home, writing, and had forgotten all about the world beyond his computer screen.
