The floral arrangements, all pastel pinks and creams, seemed to mock Clara. She'd chosen a simple, elegant black dress, a decision she now regretted as she surveyed the sea of vibrant, happy colors. And then *he* walked in, looking like a blooming rose himself.

A sharp, almost involuntary sigh escaped her lips. She quickly fanned herself with her program, wishing the air conditioning would kick in. The buffet looked unappetizing, and she couldn't bring herself to take a single hors d'oeuvre.

As if sensing her discomfort, he made his way across the crowded room, a cheerful smile plastered on his face. Clara forced herself to stand her ground as he approached.

"Clara, you look… lovely," he said, his voice a little too loud. Clara swallowed. "You too, Mark," she responded, hoping she didn't sound as brittle as she felt.
