The world seemed to tilt on its axis. Linda blinked, disbelieving. Her car, the one she’d lovingly maintained for years, was gone. A wave of heat washed over her face.

Her hands shook as she fumbled in her purse for her phone. She imagined the impudence of the person who had done this. The audacity to violate her property.

She pictured the driver of the tow truck, smirking. She needed to breathe, to get control of herself. It was just a car, she told herself. But the thought did little to ease the feeling of her chest constricting.
