The dog's leash felt like a metal cable pulling at his arm. He could not believe that Emily was claiming *he* was the one who lost the dog. The dog hadn't even been in his care at the time!

"You were the one who offered to take him for a walk!" Emily said cheerfully, as though it were the most natural thing in the world. He felt an intense pressure building in his temples, a pressure that was making it difficult to breathe.

He remembered her practically begging him to watch the dog, promising to return immediately. He sighed, the air escaping his lungs with a rush. "I thought you were going to be back in an hour," he said quietly.

She simply smiled.
