The afternoon sun, usually a welcome sight, felt like a spotlight on her. Maria squinted at the screen, the unfamiliar names and percentages blurring together. She couldn't believe this was happening. After all the years of her feeling a nagging sense of being different, she was adopted, and now this.

She tossed her phone onto the sofa, the motion jerky and abrupt. Her hands clenched into fists at her sides. She felt like tearing something up, destroying something. The quiet hum of the refrigerator seemed to mock her.

She stalked across the room to the window, the movement restless and agitated. The street below looked incredibly bland and uninteresting.
