The professor’s secretary called. "He wants to meet you," she said, her voice a monotone drone. "I can schedule something for next week." The tone of her voice made something inside him want to scream. He was already drowning in anxieties.

He hung up, the phone landing with a thud. He shoved his hands into his pockets, walking to the window. The rain splattered against the glass, blurring the already indistinct shapes of the campus. He wanted to go home, burrow under the covers, and just forget about everything. The idea of having to pretend to be happy for this meeting filled him with a weariness that went beyond physical exhaustion.
