He stared at the handwriting, familiar yet foreign, on the thin, slightly crumpled paper. It was from Emily, the girl who had stolen his first girlfriend in high school. The betrayal had stung. It had been decades, yet the old wound still felt raw.

A sharp breath escaped his lips. He tossed the letter onto the kitchen counter, the action abrupt. He ran a hand through his already messy hair. The scent of coffee, usually a source of comfort, now grated on his senses.

He slammed the cabinet door shut when reaching for a mug. He didn't even want coffee anymore. He had been having a perfectly fine morning until this stupid letter arrived. He didn’t bother to read it. It was going straight into the trash.
