The phone call had ended, but the echo of her father’s voice, explaining the "unfortunate situation," still thrummed in her ears. She slammed the door to her bedroom, the sound reverberating through the small apartment. She hated that he thought it was unfortunate. She ran her hands over the fabric of her favorite dress, a red silk number she had been planning to wear on a date, her fingers leaving faint creases in the material. A date she had been looking forward to. This whole thing was a disruption, a needless complication she didn't have room for. She wished she could go back to the world as it was only hours before.
