He glared at the blinking cursor on his laptop screen, the blank document a glaring white reflection of his inner state. The news had arrived this morning, a casual email from his mother that read more like a corporate announcement than a family revelation. A half-sister. At fifty-two. He considered deleting the whole thing, but the words, once they were read, couldn't be unread. He drummed his fingers on the desk, the rhythmic tapping a counterpoint to the racing thoughts in his head. Then he leaned back in his chair and stared at the ceiling, thinking of how to just make it all go away.
