The clinking of champagne glasses drifted from the elaborate garden party next door, a soundtrack to Emily's mounting frustration. She'd been scraping by all month, rationing groceries and skipping meals just to pay the rent.

She slammed her fist on the kitchen table, rattling the chipped teacups. The woman was always throwing these lavish parties. Always surrounded by people who had everything. Always so… carefree. Emily wanted to scream.

She stormed out the back door, needing to be away from the sounds of laughter and celebration. She felt a burning sensation in her throat.
