The living room, once a sanctuary of his childhood, now felt like a stage, and he the unwelcome audience. His parents, usually reserved, were positively giddy, showering his younger sister with attention. Her artwork adorned the walls, her accomplishments the topic of every conversation.

He stared out the window, a dull ache behind his eyes. He noticed that she had her own designated spot at the dinner table, an arrangement he'd always taken for granted. He felt a sting as his parents looked to her with pride.

He busied himself with the crossword puzzle, his mind racing. He felt the cold, hard press of envy in his ribs.
