Gemotions

The reception was in full swing, and Emily was stuck in a conversation about the weather. Every few seconds, she'd steal a glance at Michael, who was deep in conversation with a bridesmaid. The girl's easy laughter made Emily's teeth itch.

She felt a sudden urge to interrupt, to inject herself into their conversation, to prove her own wit. Instead, she plastered on a bright, phony smile and made a forced joke, hoping to draw attention back to her. The laughter never came.

Emily excused herself abruptly, claiming she needed the restroom. In the mirror, her face looked pinched and drawn. She splashed cold water on her face, and it did little to cool her sudden flush.
