"And here comes the bride!" Maria announced, forcing the words out. She clapped dutifully, her hands feeling cold and numb. She watched as Robert’s eyes lit up when he saw his bride come down the aisle.

The ceremony seemed to last an eternity. Maria's attention was fixed on Robert, on his smile, on his easy, flowing movements, and the way he touched the bride's hand during the vows.

During the reception, Maria kept a careful distance, hovering near the periphery of the festivities. She was acutely aware of every gesture, every interaction, every passing comment. Each one felt like a small, unwelcome jab. Her appetite vanished.
