“Five dollars!” the woman called out, waving a small, tattered teddy bear. It was a familiar face, a faded brown color, and a button eye missing. It was the same bear that belonged to her high school friend, Jessica. She felt like her heart had fallen into her stomach.

Jessica had always been the pretty one, the one with the perfect life. She met her perfect husband when they were in college and now lived in a huge mansion. She had a perfect family. She had never been envious. She was genuinely happy for Jessica. The feeling of dread was overwhelming.

She approached the woman, trying to appear nonchalant. But her hands trembled as she handed over the cash. She imagined Jessica would just laugh. She clutched the bear close, and walked away.
