The rain hammered against the window, mirroring the tempest within Clara. She watched from the apartment building opposite as her old friend, Daniel, helped a woman unload groceries from a car.

He looked happy. He looked as if he was enjoying himself. He looked as if he hadn't known Clara in his life. She had hoped, with every fiber of her being, that he would recall their shared history.

She’d sent him a message the previous week, a carefully worded, nostalgic email. He had replied with a brief, polite response, seemingly oblivious to their past. Clara’s knuckles whitened as she gripped the windowsill. She let the curtain fall closed, shutting out the scene.
