“Oh, it’s so nice to finally meet you,” Sarah’s new girlfriend, Lisa, said to Alex, her smile wide and bright. He could hear it in her voice, they had spent much of their time talking about their childhoods. Alex and Sarah. It made his stomach twist.

He’d known Sarah since kindergarten. They had built mud pies, fought neighborhood bullies, and shared whispered dreams under starry skies. Sarah had been the one that had held his hand through the hard times.

Lisa’s laughter, as she recounted another story, was a sharp, grating sound. Alex shifted uncomfortably, feeling a wave of heat wash over him. He mumbled something about needing to get a breath of fresh air and left the room.
