He gripped the steering wheel, his knuckles bone-white. The stoplight bled red onto his face as he watched. He and Lily had built castles from sand and told secrets in hushed tones. They had been inseparable.

Across the street, Lily, her arm linked with another man, laughed at something he'd said. Her expression was radiant, the kind of expression he had only seen for him. He'd tried, in their brief conversation, to awaken her memory.

She'd looked at him blankly, politely, and then looked back at her new companion. He took a shaky breath. As the light turned green, he slammed his foot on the accelerator, tires screeching as he sped away.
