“Just put it in the ‘donate’ pile, honey,” his mother had instructed, oblivious as ever. Ethan was supposed to be sorting through old holiday decorations. He, the oldest son, was expected to be responsible.

Ethan had found a stack of old photos. His father, in his stories, had been a dedicated family man, working tirelessly to provide. The pictures showed a life Ethan had never known: partying, drinking, and laughing with a group of friends. His father was unrecognizable.

Ethan felt a sudden urge to yell, to smash something. He looked at a picture of his family. He took the pictures and ran outside, leaning against a tree.
