He traced the faded ink with a calloused finger. The letter, penned in a frantic hand, detailed his father's youthful ambition and dreams, all directed towards a different future, a life lived far away from the farm. It spoke of wanting to be an artist, to see the world, to escape the crushing weight of their small town. The air in the barn felt suddenly thin, difficult to breathe.

John felt a strange, suffocating pressure in his chest. His father had never once mentioned these desires, instead focusing on the endless cycle of planting, harvesting, and repairing. John had always felt he was following his father’s example, now he was not so sure.

He slammed the letter back into the dusty trunk. The old man, the one he had spent so long trying to emulate, and the artist he could have been, seemed to be two different men. This new version of his father made him feel... small.
