"Dear David," Sarah read aloud, her voice tight. The words, addressed to her brother, spoke of her mother's love for him, of his innate talent, of how much he brightened their lives. Her mother had never written letters like this to *her*.

She sat at her mother’s kitchen table, the letter clutched in her hand. Sunlight streamed through the window, illuminating the dust motes dancing in the air, but her own world felt dim. Sarah felt the corners of her mouth twitch.

Sarah felt a sharp sting in her eyes. David had always been the golden child, and now, even in a forgotten letter, it was confirmed. She balled her fist, knuckles white, and pressed them against her forehead.
